What is a fracture manipulation?

The doctor or nurse in charge of your care today thinks you have broken a bone.

You will be given a temporary plaster  to protect the break until any swelling has gone down.

You will then need to have your broken bone straightened. This is called fracture manipulation.

You need to come back to ED on:

Date:

Time:

Please be prepared to wait.

Coming in for your fracture manipulation:

Come into ED and tell the receptionist you are here for fracture manipulation.

If you take tablets in the morning please have these unless you have been told not to by your doctor or nurse. Use the smallest amount of water possible to swallow them.

You may be sedated. This means you will be given medicine to make you sleepy during the procedure.

This will be given to you through a drip and a cannula in your hand.

It is important not to eat anything after 2:00 in the morning and not to drink anything after 4:00 in the morning (unless you need to take tablets).

After your fracture manipulation

If you have had sedation you will need to stay in ED for a couple of hours until you are properly awake. Your break will now have a new plaster made of plaster of paris.

Someone will need to collect you and stay with you for the next 24 hours.

The staff will give you a copy of our easy read ‘Going home after a sedative’ and ‘Looking after your plaster’ leaflet.

If you haven't had sedation someone will need to collect you as you cannot drive.

If you have any problems with your plaster please call:
