What is Blenderm Tape?

Blenderm is a hypoallergenic, waterproof plastic tape. This is used as an occlusive measure in order to remove your double vision.

This can be used as a permanent resolution to your double vision or a temporary one. This will depend on your condition as well as what is found to be most appropriate by your orthoptist.

Which lens should this go on?

Whether you put the blenderm tape on the right eye or left eye, either choice will remove your binocular double vision. However depending on your vision in either eye, you may prefer to avoid putting the blenderm tape on the eye with better vision. Depending on your most recent vision, the eye you put the tape on can be advised by your orthoptist.

Is this like wearing a patch?

When you are seeing binocular double vision this mean the eyes are not aligned. Therefore two separate images are being seen; one from either eye. Blenderm tape and a patch are similar in the sense that they both occlude/cover one eye in order to alleviate the double vision. This allows you to only see a single image. However blenderm can be seen to be more discreet in comparison to a patch. The blenderm tape still allows light to pass through whereas the patch occludes the eye completely. Depending on your preference, either option is available to you.

Can I still clean my glasses?

You are still free to clean your glasses when the tape is on however with time the tape may become dirty or lose its adhesive. Extra blenderm tape will be supplied to you in case you need to replace this. If you do remove the tape from the lens, there may residual glue left on the lens. This is easily removed using white spirit for example.

Will this cure my double vision?

The blenderm tape is used as a resolution of the symptoms rather than treating the cause of the double vision. Depending on your condition, further investigation may be required and further appointments may be put in place to see if a possible prism is more appropriate at a later date.

A prism is used to resolve double vision without occluding one eye.

Tips for fitting the blenderm:

  • The blenderm tape will go over one lens of your glasses.

  • When fitting the tape, first ensure your glasses are clean.

  • Then cut a section of the tape, allowing this to cover the entire lens.

  • Trace onto the tape the shape of your lens.

  • Cut this out using a pair of scissors.

  • Then stick the cut out tape on the inside of the appropriate lens.

  • The tape can be put on any pair of glasses you use. For example reading gls, distance glasses or sunglasses if necessary.

The tape should then be correctly fitted to resolve your double vision.
