Hydrogen methane breath test patient preparation sheet

Preparation: Four weeks before your test

  • You should not take any antibiotics.

  • You should not have undergone a fluoroscopy test or any test that requires the cleansing of the bowel such as a colonoscopy or barium enema.  

Preparation: One week before your test

  • You cannot take any laxatives or stool softeners or stool bulking agents.  

  • You need to stop any pre or probiotics or vitamin supplements containing fructose or lactose.

Preparation: 24 hours before your test

For 24 hours before your test, you must follow a restricted diet (you might be requested to follow the diet longer if needed by your requesting physician). Here is a list of permitted food and drinks and the ones that should be avoided. Remember to drink plenty of fluids during these 24 hours.

Preparation: On the day of your test

  • You should have nothing to eat for 12 hours before the test. You can drink sips of water only.  

  • Brush your teeth with a toothpaste immediately after you wake up and rinse your mouth well afterwards.  

  • Continue to take your prescription drugs with sips of water unless indicated otherwise.

  • If you are diabetic, make sure you discuss this with your doctor or diabetic Nurse.  

  • You must not smoke tobacco products or e-cigarettes and you should not use chewing gums.

  • Do not exercise and avoid increased physical activity.
