Information about the flow clinic

You need to come to the clinic with a comfortably full bladder:

You will be asked to pass water into a special machine called a Flow Meter, which is situated in a private toilet. This machine measures the rate of flow and the volume of the water you have passed.

After emptying your bladder, an ultrasound scan of your bladder will take place (also in private). This involves placing a probe on your lower abdomen to see if you are emptying the bladder completely.

The procedure, which is completely painless, will be repeated once or twice more and you therefore may be in the department for most of the morning/afternoon. Between each procedure you will be asked to drink to enable you to fill your bladder again. Drinks will be provided.

The Nurse Specialist will make arrangements for you to see the Consultant if needed or for you to be followed up by your GP.

You will be able to drive home after these procedures.

If you are booking transport through your GP surgery please inform them that the test may take up to 3 hours to complete.

Please complete and bring with you the fluid chart form for the 3 days prior to your appointment.
