The 24 hour pH monitoring test enables us to assess the amount of acid that refluxes from the stomach into your oesophagus (gullet).
The pH electrode does not know whether the acid is coming up from your stomach or if it has been swallowed such as in fruit, squash e.t.c. To avoid this problem you will need to eat foods which are ‘acid – free’. You must also refrain from eating foods that will neutralize acid.
A diet sheet is enclosed and this will be discussed when you attend for your appointment.
There is also a list of ‘Forbidden Foods and Drinks’. You MUST NOT eat or drink any of these items DURING THE PERIOD OF TESTING or else the test will be invalid.
As we also assess the amount of acid reflux occurring during the night when lying down, we kindly ask you to go to bed for 8 hours.
If you foresee any problems with the above, please contact the Nurse Endoscopists on 01752 432163/430358
