Royal Eye Infirmary Virtual Eye Clinic

What will this visit involve?

A health care assistant or a nurse will check your sight for distance with or without your current prescription glasses.

If you have your latest prescription glasses for driving or TV, kindly bring them along with you.

After this you will have drops put into your eyes to widen your pupils. Please be prepared to have the drops put in your eyes, as an eye examination without having the drops will not give us sufficient information about your eyes. This will also make your sight blurry for a few hours.

Please note: You will not be able to drive after this examination for up to 8 hours.

Once your pupils are dilated, a trained technician will take a few photographs and a special Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan of the back of your eyes. This examination will take between 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

The photograph and scan will involve a bright light, which may dazzle you and affect your sight for a few moments.

Following the diagnostic assessment of the appointment, patients on a proactive treatment  pathway will receive their intraocular injection (Lucentis or Eylea).

What will happen next?

A consultant will review the images and scans from this visit, if your condition is stable you will continue to receive bimonthly review appointments with injections. If there are any changes suggesting a more active disease then the next appointment will happen in one month.
