Welcome to the Surgical Assessment Unit

You have been asked to come to the SAU to be assessed by the surgical team.

You may be asked to take a seat in our waiting area or directed to a bed depending on your condition.

You will be taken into an assessment room where a nurse will ask you some questions and take observations. This assessment allows the nurse to triage patients.

You will then see a member of our surgical team. A plan of your treatment will be made.
If you feel more unwell or need assistance whilst waiting please alert a member of staff.
There will be a Registered Nurse looking after you who will introduce themselves at the start of the shift. If you have any questions about your care please ask your nurse.
Visiting Hours
The unit has flexible visiting between 8am and 8pm.
The surgical team complete a ward round every morning between 8am and 10am. If you require information please ring after this

Personal property and valuables
Where possible please do not keep valuables with you. Plymouth Hospitals Trust is unable to accept liability for the loss of personal property.
Mobile phones
These are permitted on the unit but please keep them on silent.
Mealtimes

Breakfast: 8am to 9am

Lunch: Midday to 1pm

Supper: 5pm to 6pm
Drinks rounds are served during the day. If you miss a meal a snack box is available. If you require a special diet please let the nursing staff know.
Planning for Discharge
When the Doctors feel that you are ready for discharge they will write a discharge letter for you and your GP. This letter may contain a prescription for medication. At times these medications will need to be obtained from the pharmacy department. If you are able to you may be asked to sit in our waiting area while you are waiting for your discharge.
Transport Home
Please arrange for a relative or friend to collect you from hospital if possible. Hospital transport can only be used for medical needs.
