Rest and Activity

You are advised to go home and have complete rest for 24 hours (ideally 48 hours) even if you feel well and have no pain. It is probable that you will not feel able to do more than minimal activities the following day. It may be 3-4 days before you feel able to resume normal activities.

Pain

You may experience some pain/discomfort, but it is not usually a problem. You will find that painkillers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, taken at regular intervals will help during this time. You may be given painkillers to take home.

Bleeding

Some oozing under the dressing is normal, this should soon stop. If there is sufficient to soak through the dressing or clothing, please consult your GP or your local minor injuries unit.

Stitches

These are usually absorbable. If you have non-dissolvable stitches, it is not advisable to drive until they are removed and you are comfortable. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and heavy gardening for 4-6 weeks. Normal gentle activity is recommended following your operation because this assists the muscle tone and can lessen pain.

Dressing

Some surgeons use a clear dressing, others Elastoplast or Mepore. Leave the dressings as directed.

If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, heat, odorous discharge, or pain, please contact your G.P. If you do develop an infection within two weeks of your surgery, please let us know by calling 01752 436104.

Diet

You may resume a normal diet whenever you feel able to. Try to avoid becoming constipated. Take a mild laxative if constipation does occur to avoid straining until the wound has healed.

Hygiene

You may have a warm bath/shower after 24 hours. Do not get the dressings wet unless directed that it is okay to do so. Avoid vigorous washing whilst healing is taking place.

Follow-up

If needed an appointment will be sent to you.

Problems

If non-urgent problems occur in the first 48 hours and you need information or advice:

  • After 48 Hours: Contact your own GP or 111
