Aims of the service

To provide age appropriate cancer treatments, facilities, advice and support to patients aged 16 to 24 years including their carers and loved ones.

To provide information, support and advice, including resources to professionals.

To offer a coordinated approach to cross county care and join teams together to give you the best care possible.

We understand that the moment you are told you have cancer can turn your world upside-down. Getting diagnosed with cancer can leave you with lots of questions; we are here to help you because being diagnosed with cancer doesn’t suddenly stop you being who you are.

The team here at Derriford co-ordinate your care, whether that be locally or elsewhere in the country.

What do we do?

The needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer are met by paediatrics and adult services. A Consultant and Clinical Nurse Specialist will be responsible for co-ordinating your care from diagnosis though treatment, they will provide you with information on investigations, treatments and side effects.

The Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) service works alongside these teams offering support and advice.

You will be allocated a “key worker” to help you navigate this path and offered an Integrated Assessment Map (IAM) portal, which helps us to holistically asses your needs. This is for information and support at any point in your cancer journey. Using this tool allows you to show us which areas of your life you feel you need the greatest support in and any areas that you are worried or concerned about.

You will have a TYA Nurse contact you to talk through these things and any other information that you need or want.

Where will I be treated?

Depending on your age you can choose to be treated locally or at a hospital of your choice (the professional team will provide you with guidance to help with this).

You may need to travel to other hospitals if they offer a specialised service that you need.

Area 61 is our Teenage and Young Adult Unit at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. This is our Principle Treatment Centre which provides specialist facilities for young people.

Patients who choose to be treated locally will have access to similar services and support as those attending the Principle Treatment Centre. Your care needs and treatment plan will be discussed with the regional team as we have close links across the peninsula.
