Diet
You may eat any type of food you wish. Aim to eat something solid every 2-3 hours. Avoid alcoholic drinks, but other fluids are encouraged.
Pain
Your throat will be sore for about two weeks. You will have been sent home with painkillers; it is important to take these regularly over the first few days. Eating will be made easier if painkillers are taken 30 minutes before meals. It is not uncommon to experience earache, the exercise of chewing helps to relieve this.
Rest
You should have a minimum of two weeks off work. The first week should be spent resting at home before getting back to your regular activities. A sick note can be obtained if requested on admission.
Mouth Hygiene
Clean your teeth with brush and paste 3 times per day. Gargle if you wish with any proprietary gargle. Some people find chewing gum useful; it keeps the mouth fresh and exercises the jaw muscles.
Avoid the following:
-
Smoking and crowded smoky places.
-
Hot Baths, it is better to have a shower or cool bath.
-
Heavy Lifting or straining.
-
Spicy and Acidic Foods for Two weeks.
If you spit blood or your breath becomes offensive (despite good oral hygiene) contact your GP.
