Using stairs with crutches

Going up the stairs 

Step up with the good leg first, then the bad leg followed by your crutch.

Safety is important

Ensure the crutch is placed in the centre of each step and your feet are fully on the steps

Go slowly, taking one step at a time

When alone and using a railing, carry the other crutch on the outside of the opposite crutch handle. 

Going down the stairs 

Put your crutches on the step below, lower your bad leg first, then your good leg.
