Rest and activity

If your procedure was performed under a local anaesthetic, you are advised to rest for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous activity for today. Provided you feel well enough you can return to work the next day. If your procedure was performed under a General Anaesthetic, you are advised not to work for at least 24 hours.

Pain

The area may ache for a few days. Paracetamol in the recommended dose should be sufficient. A small number of patients may have longer-term pain.

Stitches

Absorbable sutures are normally used. If they start to look red, inflamed or start to pull, please contact your GP.

Wound care

Keep the area clean, and dry thoroughly after washing. It is advisable to wear supportive underwear for the first week to limit swelling. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is expected. Scarring after the operation may cause slight lumpiness around the testes. If you have any concerns, please contact your GP.

Specimens

Sperm specimens are needed 16 weeks after the operation. These specimens should be sent in the pre-paid envelope. Follow the instructions on form with the specimen pot. Normal contraception method should be used until you receive a letter of clearance for your semen sample.

When you are informed in writing that the semen contains no sperm, you may consider yourself sterile and discontinue other forms of contraception.
