Building for the Future at University Hospitals Plymouth

Last week, we welcomed the announcement from the Secretary of State confirming that University Hospitals Plymouth will be part of the first wave of Trusts to receive funding under the New Hospital Programme. This will enable the construction of our new Emergency Care Building to go ahead, which will provide us with a new, modern Emergency Department with much needed space to care for our patients, as well as new theatres and modern imaging facilities. Enabling works for this have already begun and we will begin the main construction phase this summer, with an anticipated completion date of autumn 2028.

But that’s only one of the many planned estate developments at Derriford Hospital. Last year alone we opened both a new Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy, the Bigbury Orthopaedic Surgical Suite, South West Peninsula Children’s Surgical Unit, South West Liver Unit, Interventional Radiology rooms and an expanded Endoscopy department. And there’s plenty more to come.

Our Dartmoor Building is really taking shape now and is due to be completed in the spring. It’s going to house our new Urgent Treatment Centre as well as the relocated Fracture Clinic and Outpatient facility.

Later this year, we will also be opening our new LINAC bunker and Oncology extension at the back of the hospital on level 2. This will include a dedicated Brachytherapy suite with recovery spaces, and allow for the future replacement of our existing Linear Accelerators.

We are also expecting work to commence this year on our new Community Diagnostic Centre in the city centre, which is going to allow us to perform a great number of diagnostic tests for the people of Plymouth in a more centralised location.

The video update below helps to bring these developments to life:

It’s a really exciting time for us at University Hospitals Plymouth. Of course, if you’ve got any questions or thoughts on any of this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with one of the team. We’d also love to hear from you in this survey .
