UHP Maternity Support Worker wins City College Plymouth Apprentice award

Louise Lane, a Maternity Support Worker based in the Central Delivery Suite at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) has won the Intermediate Health Apprentice of the Year award from City College Plymouth.
City College Plymouth recognised the dedication and achievements of its apprentice and employer partners at the Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony held last month at Plymouth Argyle Football Club.
This special evening brought together apprentices, their families, college staff, employers and distinguished guests from the local business community to celebrate the success of the region’s future workforce.
Louise Lane won the award for Intermediate Health Apprentice of the Year for being an exemplary student during her apprenticeship. Feedback from the event credited her win to her positive nature has made her a source of support for peers, creating an encouraging environment in both the classroom and her clinical placement.
Speaking about Louise’s achievement, Ward Manager for the Central Delivery Suite, Joe Bird, said: “We are all so incredibly proud of Loui and her achievements both academically and clinically with the positive impact she has had on Central Delivery Suite since she joined us as an apprentice in October 2023.
“She is an integral part of our team and has recently been successful at interview to join the Maternity Practice Development team. We know that she will go from strength to strength in this role while also supporting and mentoring new staff to our department.”
At the event it was said that “in the maternity department, Louise excels in providing exceptional care to new mothers and their babies, her academic achievements and dedication reflect her drive for excellence. Louise’s confidence has grown as she’s developed her skills and behaviours. A valued member of her cohort, her compassion and professionalism leave a lasting impression. She is set to excel in her healthcare career, providing outstanding care and inspiring others.”
Reflecting on her award and the journey she has been on, Louise said: “I am very grateful for all the support I have received throughout my training, and I am even more grateful to the maternity staff on Central Delivery Suite who have given me the encouragement and support I needed. I couldn’t have accomplished what I have without them.
“I would especially like to give a huge thanks to my supportive manager, Joe Bird, and also Michelle Bull for being there for me, supporting me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of maternity. I never expected to get the career progression that I have achieved, and I am entirely grateful to have progressed and achieved my goals so far and look forward to what the future holds.”
