Learning About Diversity and Inclusion: 10 Free Virtual Courses

Learning About Diversity and Inclusion: 10 Free Virtual Courses

March 29, 2021

By: Emma Esparza

Emma Esparza is a career coach at Indeed with experience as a recruiter, university career advisor and senior technical career coach. She is passionate about guiding all job seekers in their intersectional uniqueness toward a successful job search and fulfilling career.

When asked how to support traditionally underrepresented or marginalized groups (and in particular, the black community), LaFawn Davis—Indeed’s Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging—says:

"The best work we can do is examine ourselves—all of us (now and always). We can listen and learn to make sure our actions in the workplace aren’t harming others.”

Davis emphasizes the importance of doing the work to understand the causes and effects of intolerance, the experiences of those who are different from us and the necessity of educating ourselves. In this article, we explore 10 free online resources you can use to learn about diversity and inclusion at work.

While some of these resources are tailored for people managers to help build and lead diverse and inclusive teams, others are more general for anyone seeking to learn more about how to be a more inclusive team member at work. A few course descriptions also reference their usefulness for “leaders”—it’s worth noting that leadership is a skill anyone, not just managers, can learn and use to create inclusive environments. Also, many of the suggested courses take place over a period of several weeks and provide an opportunity to dive deep into the respective topic.

So whether you’re a manager or leader, or simply interested in learning more, these courses on diversity and inclusion can help build our understanding of diversity and inclusion for a better, stronger workplace.

Inclusive recruitment and career progression Focus Groups for Band 5&6 - 23 July & 5 August 2021

(Non-Medical) Clinical Staff Invitation

A recent examination of our Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) data in the South West has shown that whilst we have more colleagues from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in Bands 5 compared to local populations, the number drops considerably after Band 5.  We want the South West to be the best place for all of our colleagues to live, work and achieve their career goals, and are committed to having Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Colleagues in all bands in the South West.  We want to understand what the barriers are from your perspective to applying for or gaining promotion beyond your current band.  This is your opportunity to tell us what matters most to you, and what we can do to help you achieve your career ambitions.

We are holding two focus groups to talk to you more about this and to agree what actions we can all take together to make it easier for you to apply for and achieve promotion.

Men’s Health Week: 14 - 20 June 2021

Men’s Health Week: 14 - 20 June 2021

Men's Health Week raises awareness of the health issues that affect men and boys disproportionately and focuses on getting men to become more aware of health problems they may have or could develop and gain the courage to do something about it. The theme for this year is a campaign of men’s mental health in the era of Covid-19.

For Men's Health Week 2021, we need to raise awareness of the struggles many men are experiencing with their mental health as we slowly re-open and adjust to a post-Covid world - if you want to find out more about how to get involved, click here.

On a Trust-wide level, our Communications Team and Counselling Team are working together with our Men’s Conversation members, as well as a host of both internal and external guest speakers to raise awareness and educate colleagues. Certain issues affecting men, such as work/life balance, mental health, loneliness, the importance of talking, how to seek help, financial troubles, working in a high-profile public position and pressures, as well as personal stories, will come together in a podcast series. Stay tuned for further information in the coming weeks.

For personal support, please visit our Support Hub or email us on plh-tr.staffnetworks@nhs.net to be added to our mailing list for the Men’s Conversation groups- an open forum for discussions to take place where we warmly encourage men to talk openly and confidentially about issues which are important to them, led by Dr. Jamie Read.
