Plymouth Hospitals Charity Opens New Hub at Derriford Hospital

Plymouth Hospitals Charity is excited to announce the opening of its brand-new Charity Hub at Derriford Hospital on Monday 9th June at 12 noon. Located in a prime spot along from the main entrance, the charity’s new home offers a welcoming space for the charity to connect with patients, visitors, and staff—bringing inspiring stories to life and shining a spotlight on the difference local support makes every day.
A New Chapter for Plymouth Hospitals Charity
The new hub, strategically situated in one of the hospital’s busiest areas, will serve as a central point for showcasing the vital work of Plymouth Hospitals Charity. The charity, which supports a wide range of initiatives across University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, aims to improve patient care, enhance facilities, and support the wellbeing of hospital staff.
By establishing a presence at the front of Derriford Hospital, the charity is better placed than ever to connect with people passing through the hospital every day. This increased visibility will help raise awareness of the charity’s ongoing projects, the impact of donations, and the numerous ways people can get involved.
Driving Awareness and Fundraising
The hub’s launch represents more than just a physical move—it marks a shift towards greater accessibility and community engagement. Visitors will now have an opportunity to learn about the charity's campaigns, make donations and see and hear first-hand how their support helps patients and staff throughout the hospital.
Head of Charity Corinne Smith said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to have moved into this fantastic new space right at the front of the hospital. It gives us a brilliant opportunity to connect directly with patients, visitors, and staff—and to share the powerful stories of how their support can make a real difference.
We’re so grateful to the local companies who helped transform the hub and a huge thank you especially to Willmott Dixon, who at no cost to us has, as part of their commitment to social value and giving back, funded this and been with us every step of the way—it’s been a total joy working with them and the Trust to create such a warm, welcoming space for everyone. We can’t wait to open our doors and meet the community. We’ll be up and running in just a few days—come say hello!”
A Space for the Community
The new hub is more than just a space—it’s a vibrant focal point for the community to connect with the mission and impact of Plymouth Hospitals Charity. Each year, the charity distributes around £1 million in grants to support initiatives that go beyond what NHS funding can provide. These range from cutting-edge medical equipment and pioneering research to projects that and transform patient care and environments and enhance staff wellbeing. The charity is dedicated to making every patient’s experience the best it can be.
Continuing Care
Plymouth Hospitals Charity works alongside families who choose to honour or remember loved ones through meaningful acts of generosity—ensuring their legacies live on through kindness that touches countless lives.
The new hub will serve as a welcoming, multipurpose space where supporters can drop in to ask questions, make donations, and learn about upcoming events. It will also host occasional fundraising activities and stand as a visible symbol of the charity’s vital role in enhancing local healthcare.
Making a Difference Together
Plymouth Hospitals Charity has long been a cornerstone of support for UHP , funding projects that range from purchasing cutting-edge medical equipment to creating calming environments for patients. With the new hub in such a prime location, the charity hopes to broaden its reach, inspire new donors, and ensure its mission is known to all who visit the hospital. The space was gifted to the charity by UHP NHS Trust and, since the beginning of this year has been extensively renovated by construction and property services company Willmott Dixon. As part of the company’s commitment to delivering social value across its projects, the Charity Hub was refurbished at no cost to the charity, allowing every penny raised by donors to go directly to support.
Dr Stuart Windsor, Executive Lead, Plymouth Hospitals Charity said:
"Our charity exists to do what the NHS alone cannot—to go further, reach higher and deliver more for our patients and communities. With an ambitious new vision and a dedicated new hub at the heart of our hospitals, we’re building something bigger than ever before. Every pound raised helps us go above and beyond and we invite everyone to be part of that journey."
Rob Woolcock, Director of Operations at Willmott Dixon, said:
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to support the refurbishment of this facility for Plymouth Hospitals Charity. Our commitment to the hospital goes beyond the construction of the new Emergency Care Building and we are excited to work collaboratively with the Trust and its partners over the next few years to support improving lives across the city and wider community”.
An official opening ceremony will be taking place on Monday 9th June at 12pm after which the charity invites everyone to visit the new hub, learn more about its work, and join its mission in making a difference. Every donation, no matter the size, contributes to enhancing the care and experience of patients and staff across UHP.
