Jake’s Story: “They saved my life so I’m giving something back”

In 2023, Jake Bristowe was living a full life as a husband, dad of two young children, and a passionate football fan with big plans for the future. Then, out of the blue, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
“It was a total shock. I was 34, healthy, active – and suddenly I was being told I needed major brain surgery.”
Jake was treated at Derriford Hospital, where expert surgeons and staff at University Hospitals Plymouth carried out the operation that saved his life.
“The care I received was unbelievable. It was a scary time, but the team at Derriford never gave up on me. They were skilled, kind, and gave me hope when I needed it most.”
Recovery wasn’t easy. There were days when Jake felt completely broken, both physically and mentally. But through those difficult months, he made a life-changing decision: to follow a dream he'd always had.
“During my recovery, I decided to take a chance and apply for a job I’d always wanted, working with children and coaching football.”
Jake is now the Head Coach for Football Fun Factory in Plymouth and Ivybridge, inspiring local children through fun, inclusive coaching. His story is one of strength, resilience, and purpose.
“I got a second chance at life and I’m determined to make it count."
Now, Jake is taking on another challenge: abseiling down the front of Derriford Hospital as part of the Derriford Abseil 2025 to raise money for Plymouth Hospitals Charity.
“It does change your attitude towards life. I'd never done an abseil before. It's right up my street, so I thought, why not? I’m doing this to give something back to the place that saved me. Every donation will help improve care for the next person who walks through those doors.”
By supporting Jake’s abseil, you’ll help fund projects that go above and beyond what the NHS can provide — from modern equipment and improved spaces, to wellbeing initiatives led by our incredible hospital staff.
You can sign up for this year's abseil which is taking place on 13th & 14th September.
