Anyone who has been in hospital for a long time knows how isolated and bored you can become. Outside of your normal routine days can become meaningless – even if you have friends or family who visit, they can’t be there all the time or you might not have the energy.

Plymouth Hospitals Charity recognises the positive impact a hospital radio can have on patients in this situation. With your help, we were able to match fund a DAB+ licence for Hospital Radio Plymouth with the League of Friends to expand their coverage in Plymouth, and supply radios to several wards in Derriford. More patients can now request their favourite songs and stay informed about what's happening in the hospital and the world around them.

On the 15th of January 2024, Hospital Radio Plymouth launched its digital platform, a significant milestone in the radio station's 55-year journey. We awarded them £2,340.00 to support this project, aiming to extend the station's reach to all patients, including outpatients and those on the new virtual wards. Thanks to your generous donations, we also purchased radios for Merrivale, Tavy, and Birch wards.

Since the launch, the number of daily listeners has grown to an average of over 120 listeners a day online and through the app, with probably many more on DAB, which unfortunately cannot be monitored.

Hospital Radio Plymouth shared the impact of going digital, saying, "Patients constantly say thank you to our volunteers doing the rounds, sharing memories of the reasons why they've requested particular songs. We know by playing their requests, we are making a huge impact on their well-being, creating daily smiles and overall improving the patient experience in the hospital."

We all have a personal connection to music. It helps us pass the time, remember things, and disconnect from the world around us. It can also positively influence patient recovery. While radios may seem like a small addition, the therapeutic benefits of music have long been proven to brighten moods, soothe pain, and create a sense of familiarity in clinical environments. Both patients and staff can now request their favourite songs, making it a great source of comfort and entertainment.
