Respiratory Outpatient Physiotherapy

What We Do

Our Respiratory Physiotherapy team helps people who have problems with their breathing. This includes people with conditions such as COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, and breathing pattern problems.

We check how your breathing is working and help you learn ways to make breathing easier. We also show you exercises and techniques to help clear mucus from your lungs and manage feeling short of breath.

Where We Work

We work in the Physiotherapy Department at Derriford Hospital.

Our clinics run:

  • Monday afternoon

  • Wednesday morning

Referrals

A healthcare professional (such as a doctor, nurse, or therapist) needs to refer you to our service.

At the moment, people cannot refer themselves for respiratory physiotherapy.

First Appointment

At your first appointment we will:

  • Ask questions about your breathing symptoms

  • Ask about your medication and daily life

  • Listen to your chest using a stethoscope

  • Look at your posture and how you breathe

We will talk with you about what we find and make a treatment plan that is right for you.

If needed, we will book follow-up appointments to check your progress and give more help.
