New Non-Executive Director Appointments
We are delighted to announce the appointment of two new Non-Executive Directors and two Associate Non-Executive Directors to our Board.
Dr Helen Smith will join us as a Non-Executive Director, bringing more than 30 years of clinical and leadership roles at provider, regional and national level.
National Clinical Advisor for Mental Health with NHS England Safety team for 5 years, she led the development of the mental health component of the National Patient Safety Strategy and the National Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Services Improvement programme.
She was the clinical lead for the South of England Quality and Safety Improvement for more than 14 years and spent 8 years as executive medical director at Devon Partnership NHS Trust.
Dr Smith has experience working beyond mental health. She has supported improvements in NHS 111 services, acute trust emergency departments and the establishment of the Exeter Nightingale Hospital through her work with the South West Academic Health Science Network (now Health Innovation South West).
She has spent time in the US with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and the Billions Institute and has worked with health and social care systems in England and Wales to scale and spread a wide range of interventions.
Prof. Arunangsu Chatterjee joins University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) as a Non-Executive Director with a wealth of experience in digital transformation and the digital health agenda.
Currently Vice Chair with West Yorkshire Integrated Care System, Prof Chatterjee brings a wealth of knowledge around transformation and change underpinned using technology. As Dean of Digital Transformation at the University of Leeds and Visiting Professor of Digital Health and Education with the University of Plymouth, he is deeply immersed in the digital health & education agenda, with strong national and international networks, and an understanding of how the sector is changing and evolving.
This is particularly important as UHP embarks on its journey to implementing an electronic patient record as a key enabler for holistic local and regional health system transformation.
Jabo Butera and Dr Mohana Maddula will join as Associate Non-Executive Directors. These are developmental Non-Executive roles.
Mr Butera is Managing Director of Diversity Business Incubator, a non-executive director at Devon and Plymouth Chamber of commerce, and a non-executive director of South West Business Council. He offers a breadth of business experience which extends into the communities served by UHP. Mr Butera’s in depth expertise is in inclusion and equity approach in business development and corporate governance reflecting human centered values.
Dr Maddula is a Consultant Stroke & Eldercare Physician with the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and Clinical Lead for the Southwest Peninsula Integrated Stroke Delivery Network. Dr Maddula has considerable experience of service development, governance and quality, including from the New Zealand Healthcare system, and has also served as Lead Patient Safety Consultant at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
Our two new Non-Executive Directors will serve for an initial three-year period and our two new Associate Non-Executive Directors for a two-year period. They will join the UHP Board this summer.
Non-Executive Directors (NED) and Associate Non-Executive Directors (ANEDS) are members of our unitary board of directors who, together with Executive Director colleagues, set the strategy for the Trust and scrutinise performance in meeting agreed goals and objectives. Unlike the Executive Directors, they do not have a managerial role within the Trust. Non-Executive Director appointments to NHS Trusts are subject to the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
Trust Chairman, James Brent welcomed the appointments by saying: “We are very fortunate to be joined by four people all with significant experience, expertise and knowledge in different fields. But what they share is a commitment to helping the communities we serve and supporting UHP and our staff in our improvement journey. These appointments will strengthen and make for a richer Board to lead the Trust forward.”
