Welcome to Cancer Services at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is the largest hospital in Devon and Cornwall. We provide comprehensive cancer services to the residents of Plymouth and surrounding catchment area and specialist cancer services to a wider peninsula population of almost 1,500,000 people.

We diagnose and treat approximately 3500 new cancer cases per year and have the facilities to diagnose and treat all types of cancers (malignant tumours) including: 

  • Breast
  • Skin
  • Lung
  • Colorectal
  • Urology
  • Sarcoma
  • Brain
  • Paediatric
  • Haematology
  • Upper gastrointestinal
  • Neuroendocrine
  • Gynaecological 
  • Head and neck
  • Thyroid
  • Hepato-bilary and pancreatic 
  • Cancer of unknown primary

 

There are multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for each of the cancer types treated who discuss each newly diagnosed case to agree on the best treatment plan. These meetings are usually scheduled to take place weekly and include a lead cancer clinician, surgeons, oncologist, cancer nurse specialist,  histopathologists, consultant radiologists and multidisciplinary team coordinator.

We also provide specialist cancer treatments to people locally and across the south west peninsula and these include:

  • Oesphago-Gastric surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer surgery
  • Plastic surgery
  • Liver Surgery 
  • Sarcoma Surgery
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery 
  • Thoracic Surgery

 

Where highly specialised treatments are required, patients are referred to the appropriate centre where those specialist services are provided.

 

We also offer a wide range of support services including:

  • Oncology Department : Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy
  • Specialist Palliative Services
  • Macmillan Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre 
  • Teenage and Young Adults with Cancer 
  • Acute Oncology Service

 

The Cancer Service Management Team, comprising of a Director of Cancer Services; Lead Cancer Nurse and Managers, multidisciplinary team coordinators and admin support are based within Derriford Hospital
