Mobility Centre

A Mobility and Welcome Centre is in Car Park F.

You can drop and collect Hospital patients from this secure area. A buggy service is also available from here to take patients to and from the hospital’s main entrance. 

Wheelchairs

There are wheelchairs in the main entrance. You will need a pound coin to use a wheelchair. This is refunded when the chair is returned.   

If you need help to arrive at your appointment, you can book a wheelchair and porter. This applies to the Derriford Hospital site. The porter will take you from the main entrance to your appointment. Call hotel services on 01752 432300 and ask for the porter services at least a day in advanced. 

Speaking Lifts

The majority of the hospital’s lifts are 'speaking' lifts.

Guides

Meet and Greet volunteers are at the main reception between 9am and 5pm, 7 days a week. They can: 

  • Provide directions 

  • Escort patients to their destination  

Some can help with wheelchairs, look out for their ‘Trained to Assist’ badges. 

 

Emergency Support volunteers are within the Emergency Department. They can help patients to  

  • Register  

  • Direct them to the right waiting areas.  

  • Find relatives within the department.  

  • Find other wards or departments if required. 

Toilets

Disabled and assisted toilets are available in:

  • The main foyer
  • Emergency Department
  • Fracture Clinic
  • Outpatients
  • Orthopaedic Outpatients
  • The Terence Lewis Building, levels 3 to 8

Changing Places Facility

This facility is near the main entrance. It is open daily between 8am to 6pm. 

  • Anyone wishing to use the facility must report to the Parking Desk to get a key. 

  • Users must familiarise themselves with the guidance.   

  • Individuals cannot use this alone; a carer or assistant must be present. Trust staff are unable to assist.   

  • The facility has an electric hoist with the greatest load of 200kg. Please note slings are not provided. Only slings with loop attachments are suitable for use with the hoist. You cannot use slings with clip attachments. 

Telephones

A phone booth with wheelchair access is in the main concourse on level 6 

Minicoms / Hearing Loops

The Audiology Department has Minicoms.

Most wards and outpatient areas have Hearing Loops available on request. Check with the individual unit, ward or department.
