B&Q Charity Injects Nature into the Snowdrop Suite
Baby Loss Awareness Week (9 to 15 October) is a week for everyone in the baby loss community and beyond to come together to remember and commemorate our much-loved and missed babies. UHP is no exception to this annual reflection and are pleased to be able to offer the newly refurbished garden outside The Snowdrop Baby Bereavement Unit to families who need it.
The Snowdrop Baby Bereavement Unit at Derriford Hospital is a place of extraordinary compassion - Every day, the team supports families through the most unimaginable losses with care, dignity, and comfort when it matters most.
In recognition of the service that the team provides for families in the community, B&Q stepped in to transform the small garden space outside the unit as part of B&Q Community Day 2025. The B&Q team transformed the garden into a calm, colourful, low-maintenance space where families can find a moment of peace, day or night. There is plentiful research on how nature, fresh air and outside space are integral to our wellbeing: a 2019 study concluded that spending just 20 minutes connecting with nature can help lower stress hormone levels. As such, we know scientifically that this space will make a real difference to grieving families.
The transformation has been celebrated by the Trust, the B&Q foundation, and our wider community — but the real celebration belongs to the Snowdrop Unit, for everything they do every single day.
