Positively Green

UHP's Annual Sustainability Report 2023/24

It’s that time of year again! We have refreshed our Annual Sustainability Report for 23/24 to incorporate the work completed this year and our plans for the next.

Our Annual Sustainability Report provides an update on the Trust’s progress towards both its corporate objectives articulated in the Green Plan and the principal risks set out in the Board Assurance Framework (BAF), and its responsibilities to report and deliver on achieving a net zero carbon estate by 2040. Broader sustainability commitments in terms of behavioural change, procurement plans and collaboration initiatives with partners are also included.

In 2023/24, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) refreshed its Green Plan to ensure its vision, ambitions and objectives were up to date and aligned with that of the national NHS Green Agenda. Our new Green Plan contained five key objectives which have helped drive the organisation forward, making sustainable improvements and reducing waste and inefficiencies. This in turn has reduced carbon emissions and resulted in financial savings. Alongside this, we have continued to make improvements in staff awareness and engagement by talking about the importance of individuals in the wider Green Agenda, and how the contribution of everyone in the organisation is imperative to the success of our shared objectives.

The achievements outlined in this annual sustainability report are a result of many departments coming together to embed sustainability across the organisation. This has included clinical and non-clinical teams, suppliers, partners, our patients and local community. These projects include the launch of a sustainability framework in our Emergency Department, the development of an estate decarbonisation strategy, progress on our net zero carbon building development of the new urgent and emergency care facility, further improvements to our green spaces, and enhancements to our sustainable travel offering.
