What on Earth is Carbon Literacy?

Today, over 70,021 individuals from over 5,266 organisations are Carbon Literate – UHP’s sustainability team are working hard to increase that number by delivering Carbon Literacy Training, the first session of which took place on Monday 18 September.

The Carbon Literacy Trust’s charitable aim is “to advance the education of the public in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment” through the dissemination of Carbon Literacy, a term they define in the following way:

‘An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.’

Participants completed science-led e-learning prior to the face-to-face session. The latter of which encouraged active participation, group work and application of knowledge. Informative, hopeful and relevant, the course resonated with the climate conscious team members and supported them to understand how their specific roles could play a role in carbon reduction.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the climate anxiety of recent times- foreboding news and points of no return loom big in our digital spheres. The training enabled connection with like-minded people and the formulation of realistic and impactful goals that helped to ease the feeling of paralysis in the face of perceived powerlessness.

In the sustainability team, we imagine a future whereby our workforce is informed about the climate emergency, empowered to do something about it and confident enough to myth bust in the face of misinformation. If you’d like to be part of that future, contact the sustainability team, and enquire about carbon literacy training today!
