Derriford’s Harmonic Recycling Journey

In healthcare, even small changes can make a big impact. At Derriford Hospital, that change is happening through a growing initiative in our theatres, a project dedicated to reducing waste and increasing the recycling of singleuse surgical equipment.

For years, devices used in surgery have typically been treated as clinical waste after a single procedure. But thanks to our participation in the Harmonic Recycling Project, Derriford is now helping to ensure these devices have a second life rather than ending up hightemperature incineration.

Harmonic devices are advanced surgical instruments that cut and seal tissue using ultrasonic energy instead of traditional techniques like heat or electricity. They’re commonly used across many types of surgery, including general, colorectal, gynaecology, urology, and more, because they offer surgeons excellent precision and control.

In the summer of 2025, the recycling scheme was implemented, allowing used surgical devices to be collected, processed, and fully recycled, transforming what was once waste into reusable material.

This means fewer raw materials are needed to manufacture new devices, and less waste is generated within our theatres, a double win for both environmental sustainability and the circular economy.

Theatres at Derriford Hospital have already begun making measurable progress, with quarterly reporting showing a steady rise in the number of devices being returned for recycling. As the project continues, the environmental benefits will only increase. Derriford has also now taken the next step by buying back remanufactured Harmonic devices at around half the price of new ones. This shift not only supports the circular economy but delivers measurable environmental and financial benefits every time a remanufactured device is used:

  • 1.74 kg of CO₂ saved per remanufactured device

  • 210 g of waste diverted from incineration per device

  • Around £230 saved per device compared with buying new

With more Trusts across Devon and Cornwall joining the initiative, we’re becoming part of a growing regional effort committed to reducing healthcare waste and embracing sustainable innovation.
