New bee and insect hotels on the Derriford Hospital site

The loss of insects has far reaching consequences for entire ecosystems. They provide a food source for many small mammels. birds, amphibians, bats and reptiles, while plants rely on insects for pollination. In the UK we have around 267 different species of bee. Of these, just one is our native honey bee, 25 are bumble bees and the rest are solitary bees. Solitary bees are fantastic pollinators and absolutely essential for supporting biodiversity. they're non-aggressive, safe to be around and some species will use the nest cavities provided in the insect hotel.

UHP is working together with local conservationists at local company Pollenize to improve our urban environment and we are now the proud owners of three new insect hotels in the Orchard on the Derriford Hospital site. These offer a safe habitat for bees and other insects to lay their eggs, raise offspring, and feed and seek refuge from predators.

Also, in conjunction with Pollenize, we would like you to tell us about your observations around the Derriford site area, called a bioblitz. A bioblitz is a short, intensive survey of biodiversity in a specific area. This valuable information helps us to monitor the productivity of our green sapces and identify what's needed to further improve them. All you have to do is use a smartphone so Pollenize and UHP can track the habitats on site. More information on this can be found within the Orchard on the information board.
