Recycling Bins Introduced Across Derriford Hospital Theatres
A full rollout of new recycling bins has now been completed across Derriford Hospital’s theatre departments. Bins are in place in Main Theatres (Level 4), Bigbury Theatres (Level 2), Freedom Theatres (Level 2), Plastics Theatres (Level 7), and CT3, marking a significant step forward in improving waste segregation where it matters most.
The new bins are designed specifically to capture soft plastics and paper at the point of use in anaesthetic rooms. These areas generate large volumes of clean, recyclable materials that too often end up in clinical waste. By making recycling easy and accessible, we’re reducing unnecessary incineration, cutting carbon, and supporting more sustainable clinical practice.
This change helps reduce the environmental impact of high‑intensity theatre activity, supports the Trust’s net‑zero ambitions, and encourages consistent, sustainable behaviours across teams. Better segregation also reduces clinical waste costs and aligns with national theatres sustainability guidance.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this happen, from anaesthetic and scrub teams to ODPs, support staff, and our dedicated green champions. Your continued effort, enthusiasm, and leadership in reducing waste are what drive meaningful change. You’re helping to shape greener theatres every day, and this rollout is another example of your commitment in action.
