Uniform Swap Shop saves £6012.36 and 1955.75 kgCO2e!

With the help of the Discovery Library on L5, the Sustainability team has set up a uniform swap shop in an effort to avoid waste and save staff money. Staff filled our swap shop with donated pre-loved and unworn uniforms after an amnesty was announced in the Daily Email. Kirsty and Sophie from the Sustainability team then organised the uniforms roughly based on size and role, a job that was taken on by the volunteers- Kirsty and Sophie are so grateful for this help!

Since we opened the swap shop in January 2026, staff have picked up 66 pairs of trousers, 94 dresses, 3 blouses and 8 scrubs. According to our reuse platform WarpIt, it costs approximately: £25.44 to replace a dress with new, £23 to replace a tunic with new and £10 to replace a blouse with new. This means our staff have saved a total of: £2391.36 on dresses, £2139 on tunics and £1452 on trousers. We’re so proud of being able to offer these free uniforms to staff at a time when the cost of living is so high!

From an environmental point of view, reusing these uniforms has saved us approximately 1955.75 CO2e! To buy new has the following carbon footprint:

Healthcare dress: 8kgCO2e

Tunic: 7.75kgCO2e

Trousers: 7kgCO2e

Blouse: 7 kgCO2e

A simple idea to reuse and redistribute unwanted and preloved uniforms has therefore had a considerable impact in terms of carbon and cost: in total, £6012.36 and 1955.75 kgCO2e was saved.

A big thank you to the Discovery Library for hosting our swap shop! If you have spare uniforms to drop off, you can do so when the library is staffed Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm

Feel free to pop along to the swap shop in the Discovery Library on L5 during the staffed hours to peruse the uniforms on offer. Please note that some of the uniforms are brand new and others have been worn before and the stock we have is a random so we cannot guarantee that we will have stock of what you need. We would ask that you let the Library staff know which uniforms you are taking so they can keep a tally!
