What we do
The Specialist Mechanical Workshop designs, develops, manufactures, services & repairs bespoke medical and assistive aids for the treatment, care and rehabilitation of patients both within the NHS and within the community. Specialist engineers will also help research suitable equipment and commercial solutions for the well-being of patients, can assist with design and development projects and can support and investigate new innovative ideas.
The Workshop will also service and maintain mechanical equipment not covered by existing contracts (such as manual wheelchairs and surgical tools) for The Trust and external customers
The Workshop covers a wide range of mechanical engineering processes and can provide prototypes and low volume manufactured products in a variety of materials, particularly bespoke items that are not available commercially. The Workshop uses Inventor CAD software packages to draw and model designs. This can be saved in various formats for ease of opening and can be used in conjunction with a 3D printer to produce rapid prototyping from a variety of materials.
The Specialist Mechanical Workshop is part of the Healthcare Science & Technology Service Line which operates within the ISO 9001:2015 internationally recognised Quality Management Standard.
The Workshop also services and maintains manual wheelchairs (including portering chairs), patient treatment couches and chairs and surgical instruments.
