Derriford Hospital is well served by public transport. We have a nationally renowned green travel plan and encourage the use of public transport among staff, patients and visitors, wherever possible.

Getting public transport to Derriford Hospital

Buses

  • You can buy single bus tickets for £2 on numerous journeys until 31 December 2024.       

  • Most buses are wheelchair accessible.  

  • If you receive benefits, you can claim a refund from the Derriford Hospital Cashier on level 7.  You must show proof of benefits and your bus ticket at each visit to re-claim fares.   

Timetables 

Park and Ride

  • There is a public park and ride site located north of Derriford Hospital at the George junction.  

  • Parking is free, although you will need to purchase a ticket to travel on the bus. Alternatively, you can walk to the hospital in about 20 minutes.

Taxis 

  • You can phone TAXIFIRST free from the Derriford Hospital foyer on 01752 222222.  

  • Check with your taxi provider if you need wheelchair accessibility. 

There are other taxi providers, some of which are wheelchair accessible meaning patients can remain in their wheelchairs without transferring. 

Trains 

  • The closest railway station is Plymouth Station in the city centre. 

  • Check National Rail Enquiries for train timetables or call on 03457 48 49 50  

  • There are direct bus services between the railway station and Derriford hospital. Plymouth City Bus 42, 42A and 42C. Stagecoach number 1. 

Support with getting to your healthcare appointment 

You may qualify for Supported Transport if you: 

  • Do not have or are unable for medical reasons to travel in your own transport, and 

  • Cannot be driven to your healthcare appointment with friends, neighbours or relatives, and 

  • Are medically unable to use public transport, or this is not practical due to your isolated/rural address 

Please note, due to limited availability, this is prioritised for vulnerable patients in rural or isolated areas.

Parking

There are a number of car parks for patients and visitors at the Derriford Hospital site. This includes spaces for Motorcycles and Bicycles.  

  • Parking charges apply 24 hours a day 

  • Drop-off and collection bays are available around the hospital entrances.

Paying for Parking

Different carparks have different methods of payment. You will either pay and display or pay on exit.

Pay and display 

Some of our car parks are pay and display and require you to purchase a ticket from the machine located in the car park at the time that you park.  

  • Pay and display machines accept cash only 

  • Visitors who can only find a space in pay and display and do not have cash can take their car details to the parking desk in the main entrance and pay by card. 

  • Pay and Display are in the North West Quadrant and by Rowan House. 

Pay on exit 

If you use a pay on exit car park you will pay for your parking at the end of your visit. These carparks use Automatic Number Plate Recognition. 

  • Pay on exit machines accept cash or card 

  • Blue badge holders, see Disabled Parking section  

Pay on exit machines are in: 

  • Main hospital entrance on level 6 

  • Car Park A 

  • Multi-storey car park. One in the main foyer, one on level 0 (near the back) and one on level 2 (near the back) 

  • Entrance to the top of car cark C 

Parking App 

You can use the Saba Parking App on your phone to pay for parking in Radiology and Brittany House.

Disabled parking

We have a designated disabled car park and disabled parking spaces across the Derriford Hospital site.  

  • Car Park F is a designated disabled car park for patients, all disabled badge holders have the first four hours free, after that standard car parking charges apply. 

  • Parking for blue badge holders is free of charge across the site, up to a maximum of four hours when parked in a marked disabled bay. 

  • If using a Pay on Exit car park: hold the barcode, in the photo side of your blue badge, under the scanner at the exit barrier machine. This will scan your badge and let you out for free.

Shuttle bus

We have a free shuttle bus service available for those patients and their carers that need help getting around the Derriford Hospital site.  

We regret that the bus cannot currently transport persons in wheelchairs, but folded wheelchairs, walkers & other large items can be accommodated.  

To use the service 

  • Park in any disabled or standard car parking space, as applicable.  

  • Call the parking desk on 01752 432000 giving your location. 

  • The driver will collect you and drive you to wherever you need to go within the Derriford site.  

  • After your appointment or visit is over, call again. You will be collected and returned to your parked vehicle. Alternatively, go to the parking desk, by the main entrance, who will call the bus for you. 

Unexpected stays or over-running appointments

In addition to standard parking arrangements, if your stay is unexpectedly extended either due to clinics running late or unexpected admission to hospital, then please ask the ward or department to contact the parking office on 32000 giving your car details and which car park you are parked in.

Free and discounted parking

Free parking 

Available to: 

  • Resident parents of children in hospital or parents whose babies are being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 

  • Relatives of those patients who are critically ill. The critical care unit will contact the Parking Desk. 

  • Oncology patients attending for treatment 

  • Relatives of patients being cared for on the End of Life Care Pathway. 

  • Those who are visiting the bereavement office or collecting a death certificate. 

  • Members of the public donating blood if parked in the Blood Donor Car Park. 

  • All patients who are undergoing a course of treatment who are required to attend the hospital for at least 3 days a week (Must supply an appointment card or letter) 

If you qualify under any of these groups, please go to the Parking Desk in main reception to obtain your special parking permit. Proof of appointments must be shown and an authorisation slip obtained from the department or ward. 

Discounts for frequent visitors 

Discounts are available for a week or longer: 

  • £24 for a 5 day ticket (Savings up to £36) 

  • £32 for a 7 day ticket (Savings up to £52) 

  • £96 for 1 month ticket (Savings up to £276) 

All concessionary tickets can be shared between different vehicles.

Travel Expenses 

Some patients in receipt of certain state benefits may be entitled to a refund of their parking costs and travel expenses. For further information please visit the Cashier’s Office on level 7 of Derriford Hospital or telephone 01752 439805. 

Charge your electric vehicle

Available at the Multi Storey Car Park. 

  • Charge your electric vehicle for up to 4 hours at pay as you go charge points. 

  •  Most vehicles will be fully charged in three to five hours. 

  • The charge points are 7kw mode three twin head charge points using type two connectors (not provided).

Charges 

  • Parking charges apply in the Multi Storey Car Park.   

  • Pay as you go charge points cost £2.50 an hour. This charge is payable until you unplug your vehicle, even after it's fully charged. You can’t stop charging using the Pod Point app.
